Identifying the symptoms and risks of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer. This cancer occurs in the protective lining of the body that covers the internal organs called the mesothelium. There are three main types of mesothelioma which are as follows:

  • Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma:

The most common form of mesothelioma is pleural mesothelioma. More than 70% of mesothelioma patients normally suffer from this very type. It attacks the lungs.

Pericardial Mesothelioma:

The pericardial mesothelioma attacks the heart and this is the least common.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma:

Peritoneal Mesothelioma occurs in the peritoneum and attacks the abdominal cavity. It is far less common compared to pleural mesothelioma.

The main cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. The people who are exposed to asbestos in any way are likely to develop major signs and symptoms of mesothelioma in the future and it could take 20- 30 years for the symptoms to appear. According to experts, smokers tend to be more susceptible to mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Symptoms:

There is a majority of people who are suffering from Mesothelioma but they don’t notice any symptoms of this disease. And they do not even appear in the early months/stages.

Regular medical checkups can highlight this problem and if diagnosed at an early stage, the patient has a fairly positive chance of recovering from Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma’s major symptoms are back pain, fever, chest pain, weight loss, fatigue, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, continuous cough and often bloody too, hoarseness, and swelling in arm and face.

Major symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea, weight loss, vomiting, and accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.  The symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include fever, breathing problems, night sweats, chest pain, palpitations, and irregular heartbeat.

Mesothelioma Risk Factors:

The most common and widely known risk factor of mesothelioma happens to be exposed to asbestos. Those who work in such places that have asbestos in the environment are prone to get mesothelioma.

According to some experts sometimes the x-ray substances also happen to be responsible for the pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma.  Those people who happen to be regularly in touch with Zeolite also happen to be at risk of getting mesothelioma.

Zeolite happens to be a mineral that is found in the Anatolian region of Turkey. Some medical experts suggest that a connection between mesothelioma and simian virus 40.

Tobacco is not directly related to mesothelioma by the combination of people who work in the environment surrounded by asbestos and those who smoke are 50% more likely to get mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma tends to be a rare form of cancer but it is no less dangerous. Till now, no proper cure has been found for mesothelioma. The main problem is that mesothelioma takes quite a long to discover and diagnose.

Therefore it cannot be detected in the early stages of the disease. Mesothelioma is such a deadly disease that leaves the patient maximum of two years to live. The key is to always take precautions and stay away from asbestos as well as those exposed to it. Maintain regular checkups with the doctor.
